Your Personal Research Journey

The topic I have chosen to do my research paper on is Aspergr's Syndrome. I am focusing on
successful strategies for working with children with Asperger’s. I had done a little research on this topic when I was an undergrauate and I also had a friend whose family was going through a horrible time. My friend's brother had originally been diagnosed with Autism and for many years he was being treated for Autism. My friend had borrowed my text book which talked about Autism and Asperger's Syndrome and after doing some reading she had realzied that there was a possibility that her brother had been misdiagnosed. My friend and I spent time looking up on the Internet and realized that Asperger and Autism have some similar characteristics, but many differences as well. Th topic is very interesting and I would love to explore this topic more to see if there is any way a person with Asperger's can be successful in school and in life.

If anyone has any suggestions on articles I can read and look at I would really appreciate it.

  1. Sounds to me like you chose a good topic. This is my first time hearing and seeing the word "Asperger". Is this syndrome hereditary? What are some of the effects in young children as well as adults? I'm curious.

  2. Darlene first I would like to commend you for stucking with your friend during this time. I know how it can be when someone finds out that a member of your family has an illness. I beleieve that your research would benefit many people within the educational system as well as parents and family members. Great topic.

  3. Hi Tanya,
Yes Asperger is hereditary. Also it has some of the same similarities as Autism. People with Asperger have difficulties with social skills as well as difficulties with creativity. In young children it makes them act up more and young children have difficulties making friends and playing with other children. It is harder for them to learn because many classes such as English classes are hard for them especially those that require reading fiction and writing stories. They have difficulties following instructions unless things are repeated often. Also, have a set schedule and a routine are very important and it must never be changed because people with Asperger's cannot adjust to change. It affects their sleep.

  4. Thank you Joy. The disability is a sad one, but it is also interesting. Many people feel that Asperger's and Autism are the same when in reality there are differences. Those who have Autism have dfficulties understanding language while those with Asperger's does not have this problem.
